GATTACA

We have been watching the movie GATTACA, which is about pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD). If you could select for traits in your children using PGD, would you want to do it? Which traits would you select for? Share your thoughts.

honestly, I believe it's okay to 'design' your baby. I think it's okay to choose different details about children. It gives us a chance to be better than we are, less diseased and more intelligent. I think that if we'd do this there would be a pretty good outcome. Granted there is a chance that the 'naturals', those who haven't been PGD'd, would hate those who have been. There would be a great jealousy in that area of society which might lead to wars and such... mass weapons of destruction. But hey, no revolution ever occured without a war, right?

I would only use PGD for screening diseases that is it. i feel that it is very un-ethical to screen for traits that could give someone an advantage in life. that being said i would perhaps use the PGD to also screen for compatibility of donorship for certain things if there is illness in the family.

Yes, I would want to do it.
I would take the traits of healthy. I think healthy is the best thing to desire. people cannot do anything without being healthy.

Well, if I could use PGD, I would want to use that for my child. Especially I would pick health as the the most important trait. Because I really do think the health is most important thing in the life and, as all the parents do, I want my child to be healthy. ^^

Everyone here says they want their kid to be healthy, that's obvious. However, isn't there any other reason why you'd choose specific traits for your child? I mean, no one here is selfish and wants their kid to be better than the rest?

I would not use PGD as a means of selecting "designer children." I believe that this is not a correct means of choosing your children! I think you should check into the political stand point on this issue before pursuing such a controversial thing.

hmm. i wouldnt do PGD, unless i really had to, because its giving my child an unfair advantage, that other children wouldnt have. and i would rather my child naturally be what i wanted them to be, if possible, rather then just pay doctors to confirm enhancements. if i were to use PGD, the only trait i would select for my child would be height, because im not that tall, nor are my parents or grandparents

From a christian stand point this is a very wrong way of going about having children. Considering the fact that a life is existant from the point of fertilization and not just when the mother can feel the fetus move inside her. It is still a life no matter what you say about the situation!

funny thing about genetics, is that everything is reliant(sp) on probability. Now, thats to its sister course (biotechnology), probability is now out of the question. Now its a game of Lego, you replace the insignificant blocks/pieces on the box, and you create a better figure, and better I mean, "What I want". If we are going to talk about the "Advancement" that we are going to have by using PGD,You CANT eliminate environmental factors that cause disease, mental disorders, mutations. We must eliminate those factors first before, we proceed to a certain step, that clearly disturbs someones ethics.

That's just wrong! A good parent should love their children whether or not they are unhealthy or have some other undesirable trait. When doing PGD, parents are choosing to throw out more of their children then they keep. Any one of those children could have grown up to do something special, like save the world or something, even with various undesirable traits.

I think its very good to have this type of technology.i like to use PGD giving birth to children with out any health problem is I think its amazing
health is precious. One of the most important things that the parents could give there children is thier health.with the help of this technology we can make our own design of the child like tall, compllextion, and if the parents have any disease they cannot pass their disiese to their kid.its just wonderful!

i noticed how health is coming up a lot. well. there are babies being born without PGD that are healthy. and those who arent as healthy, we've already discussed that biotechnology is doing a lot so those affected children can live a more "normal" life. so overall. if you want youre child to be healthy, you dont need PGD. also, GATTACA is an inevitable outcome for our world if we took PGD to a higher level. look at how the "valid" and "in-valid" live their lives. we already have enough criticism, discrimination, and judging going on in this world. we dont need another reason to do so

I think GDP is wrong to use esspecially when they get rid of some of the embryos. Choosing what you child would be like would diffinently cause problems between people, and once we started choosing specific traits there are some people who would take it unacceptably far, like choosing hight, eye colour, and how smart children will be.

I believe all human life is sacred regardless of whether a human is conscious. You wouldn’t kill your aunt if she got knocked unconscious by a two by four. Seeing as she’s unconscious, she can’t tell you whether she wants to die or not.
There are two possible responses to your aunt on the floor. The first is to not kill her because she is a human being – made in the image of God. This is what our democratic legal system was built on. Murder = bad!!
The second response is only to value your aunt on how she makes you feel. You don’t kill her because, as your relative, she is close to you and knows you. If you really hated her, or thought she was better off dead, you would kill her.
Is there any difference with a fetus? The second response would have you kill or keep the fetus - based only on it’s usefulness to you! How it makes you feel! There is no concern for right or wrong.
Ok, you say, who cares? Everybody who has less power than someone else. Nietzsche (sp?) said that in the absence of moral authority the “will to power” triumphs. “Survival of the Fittest.” Whoever is bigger. What’s to stop us from making those super-soldiers. Or enliminating aunts who we don’t like!
